The Effect of Duolingo Games as Extramural English on Vocabulary Mastery
This study aims to examine the effect of using Duolingo games as a form of Extramural English on the vocabulary mastery of eleventh-grade students at Mu’allimin Boarding School Bangkinang. Employing a quasi-experimental design, the research involved two groups: an experimental class that learned vocabulary through Duolingo games and a control class that received conventional instruction without the application. Data were collected using pre-tests and post-tests in the form of multiple-choice vocabulary questions. The findings reveal that students in the experimental class showed a significant improvement in vocabulary mastery, as indicated by higher mean scores in the post-test compared to the control group. Statistical analysis using the independent sample t-test confirmed a significant difference (p < 0.05), supporting the hypothesis that Duolingo games positively impact vocabulary acquisition. This suggests that integrating Duolingo games as Extramural English can be an effective and engaging strategy to enhance students’English vocabulary mastery.
