This research aimed to investigate the effect of using podcasts as a medium
on students’ listening comprehension at the English Language and Education
Study Program of the University of Pahlawan Tuanku Tambusai. The study
employed a quantitative approach using a pre-experimental one-group
pretest–posttest design. The sample consisted of 23 first-semester students
selected through purposive sampling. The research instrument was a listening
comprehension test consisting of 30 items measuring three key indicators:
specific information, gist, and inference. The research procedure included
administering a pretest, applying podcast-based instruction over four
sessions, and administering a posttest. The findings revealed a significant
improvement in students’ listening performance. The mean score increased
from 47.22 on the pretest to 74.72 on the posttest, with an average gain of
27.50 points. The normality test indicated that the data were not normally
distributed; therefore, the hypothesis testing was conducted using the
Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. The result showed a significance value of 0.000
(p < 0.05), indicating a significant difference between the pretest and posttest
scores. Based on these results, it can be concluded that podcasts have a
significant effect on improving students’ listening comprehension. Podcasts
helped students enhance their skills in identifying specific details,
understanding main ideas, and making inferences from spoken texts.
Moreover, podcasts provided authentic, flexible, and engaging listening
materials that supported students’ motivation and listening development.
Therefore, podcasts are recommended as an effective supplementary medium
in listening instruction.
