ABSTRACT
Ruqiah, (2025): The Relationship Between Family Support in Caring for Elderly Hypertension Patients and Hypertension Severity in Tarai Bangun Village, UPT Puskesmas Tambang Work Area
Hypertension is a serious health problem characterized by an increase in blood pressure of ≥140/90 mmHg. The severity of hypertension is a concern because higher blood pressure increases the risk of serious complications in various organs. Uncontrolled hypertension can cause damage to the heart, brain, kidneys, blood vessels, and eyes. Complications such as heart attacks, strokes, kidney failure, hypertensive retinopathy, and peripheral artery disease often arise due to persistently high blood pressure. Family support is a form of caregiving behavior provided by family members, including emotional, instrumental, informational, and appraisal support, both when an individual is healthy or ill. Family support is especially crucial for the elderly, who are at high risk of experiencing serious complications. It is believed to play a significant role in controlling blood pressure. This study aims to determine the relationship between family support in caring for elderly hypertension patients and the severity of hypertension in Tarai Bangun Village, within the UPT Puskesmas Tambang work area. This research uses a cross-sectional design and was conducted from December 18-31, 2024, with a total sample of 96 participants. Data were collected using univariate and bivariate analysis with the chi-square test. Univariate results showed that 50 (52.1%) participants had good family support, while 46 (47.9%) participants had grade 2 hypertension. The chi-square test indicated a significant relationship between family support in caring for elderly hypertension patients and the severity of hypertension (p-value = 0.000). This study suggests that elderly individuals should adopt a healthy lifestyle and regularly monitor their blood pressure.
